Prairie View A&M University
Prairie View A&M’s baseball team outlasted Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Texas Southern with clutch hitting and pitching for a 4-2 victory during Saturday’s weekend action.
Freshman Victor Mendoza struck out 11 in 7.0 innings of work and allowed just three hits.
In relief, Derrick Curry fanned five in 2.0 innings on the hill, allowing just three hits as he struck out the side in the top of the ninth for the win.
Rust College
The Bearcats won two of a three games with Tougaloo Collegethis weekend.
In game one, Rust infielder Maury Weaver was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and had three rbis while scoring three runs for the No. 10 ranked Bearcats in its 12-3 win over Tougaloo. Weaver also went 2-for-4 with a double and stolen base in Rust College’s 12-4 win in game three.
West Virginia State University
The Yellow Jackets won an extra inning affair defeating Concord University by the score of 3-2 in game one of the scheduled doubleheader Sunday. They also won by the same 3-2 score in game two to sweep Concord.
Starter Ethan Laucha, completed 8.0 innings on the bump allowing 3 hits while striking out 12 batters in game one.
Delaware State University
The Hornets were behind 5-3 to Coppin State until they put four on the board in the sixth inning to regain the lead and extended their season long winning streak to four-games after rallying for a 7-5 come from behind victory over the Eagles.
Freshman Ryan Rigby threw four scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking just one, to earn his first collegiate win.
Talladega College
Talladega was on the road visiting Bethel University in non conference action over the weekend. In game one of the opening three-game series, HBCU’s No. 9 ranked Tornadoes defeated the Bethel Wildcats by the score of 9-5.
The Wildcats took a first inning lead but Talladega wasted no time coming back scoring four runs in the second on outfielder Jose Santiago bases loaded grand slam. For the game Santiago went 2-for-3 with a double and five runs batted in.
Gerlin Cruz, in 7 innings on the mound gave up eight hits, three earned runs striking out 10 batters.
