Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball

Weekend action on the baseball diamond saw an attempt at a national record, a perfect game, and some outstanding pitching which highlights another edition of Black College Nines’ Who’s Hot in HBCU baseball.

 

Benedict College

Tigers’ outfielder Bradon O’ Connor continues his assault on the national NCAA Division II stolen base record. The DII record for stolen bases in a season is 96 in 1987. O’Connor added 9 steals over the weekend against Edward Waters University raising his total to 91 total bases stolen this season. He is five away from making history many thought would never be broken. He has stolen 91 bases out of 98 tries in 43 games during the 2022 season.

 


Grambling State University

The Tigers starting pitcher Shemar Page provided a rare gem in collegiate baseball. Page threw a perfect game opening Grambling State’s three-game series on Friday night as the Grambling State defeated Alcorn State 16-0. Page was in command of his pitches, threw 84 pitches in the no hitter collecting a season and career-high 13 strikeouts. He now has 98 strikeouts on the season.

 

 


University of Maryland Eastern Shore

In Friday’s opening contest in a three-game series, the Hawks won 7-5 over host Norfolk State. Noah Covington, in 6.0 innings of work, allowed 5 runs but he struck out nines batters and allowed just one walk batter.

 

 


Harris Stowe State University

Starting pitcher Alex Williams went the distance in a complete game 5-4 win over Hannibal-LaGrange University Saturday in the series opening game doubleheader. Williams in 7.0 innings on the hill allowed four runs, three earned runs and recorded eight strikeouts.
