The Norfolk State baseball team continues its nine-game homestand to start the 2022 season when the Hoyas of Georgetown University come to Marty L. Miller Field for a three-game series.
The teams play single games at 3 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday.
The Spartans (0-3) are in search of their first win of the season after dropping three games to Marist last weekend at Marty L. Miller Field. Georgetown went 1-2 in a three-day round-robin event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, dropping games to Rider (6-4) and Wake Forest (9-1) but defeating Lafayette (15-8).
Spartan vs. Georgetown Short-Hops- Dionte Brown had the hottest bat among the Spartans last weekend, tallying three multi-hit games against Marist. He hit .538 (7-of-13) for the weekend.
- Brown leads the nation with three triples, two of which came in game 2 of the Marist series. He earned MEAC Player of the Week for his performance.
- The Spartans had 11 new position players and two new pitchers make at least one appearance, including five transfers and eight freshmen.
- Nolan Manzer, who was named to the preseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year award, threw three scoreless innings in the finale of the Marist series. He allowed just one hit and fanned three.
- The Spartans turned four double plays last weekend, most by any MEAC team in the opening weekend.
- Despite losing two of three in Winston-Salem, Georgetown slugged four homers in its season-opening series, two by Andrew Ciufo – who ended the weekend with seven RBIs.
- Jake Hyde (.556) and Cam Meyer (.417) also swung the bat well at Wake Forest.
- Georgetown is coming off of a 6-25 season in 2021, including a 6-19 mark in BIG EAST play.
- The Hoyas welcome six freshmen and 11 transfers to the 39-man roster for 2022.
- NSU and Georgetown have played five times previously, with NSU winning two of the five games (once since vacated). The last meeting came during the 2011 season.
