Head Coach Omar Johnson Notches 13th 30-Plus Win Seasons At Jackson State

Jackson State head baseball coach Omar Johnson notched his 13th season winning 30-plus ball games during the regular season this past May 8th, 2021.

In his fifteenth season at JSU, Johnson has posted an overall 241-100 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record. In postseason SWAC tournaments he is 16-12, and 1-4 in NCAA Regional play with back-to-back league championships in 2013 and 2014.

During the 2021 regular season, Coach Johnson led the Tigers to the 15th consecutive winning seasons as they concluded this season with a 31-8 overall record. Johnson’s career record at JSU is 478-298.

His tenure at Jackson State has helped the team achieve national recognition. The Tigers are currently ranked the No. 1 team in Black College Nines (BCN) HBCU Baseball large school top 10 poll and is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 30 poll.

Coach Johnson’s best record in a single season occurred during 2017, finished at 38-17.

He now shares the record for the most wins in the SWAC conference with former Alabama State head coach Mervyl Melendez at 24-0.  Melendez achieved the milestone during the 2016 season.

Johnson attended the University of North Alabama, where he played for the North Alabama Lions baseball team as an outfielder and served as an assistant for North Alabama before being named the head coach at Jackson State University in June 2006.

During the COVID-19 shortened season of 2020, JSU compiled a 9-7 record including wins over Southern Illinois and Florida A&M. The baseball program had 19 All-SWAC Academic Team of Excellence recipients for the 2020 season.  Jackson State baseball has finished with a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better for the fifteenth straight year under Johnson’s helm.

Johnson reached his 400th coaching milestone during the 2018 season leading JSU to a 34-18 season.

Johnson stated “the mission is always the same, win ball games. We have the opportunity to have good players. It is remarkable to play this long and win 30 ball games a season.”
