HBCUs Continue to Receive Votes in Latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division I Poll

Alabama State and Coppin State continue receiving votes in Collegiate Baseball’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Associations (NCBWA) NCAA Division I Top 30 Poll released Monday. This is the second week in a row that HBCU programs listed in the NCBWA Top 30 poll continue to receive votes among the nation’s elites.

Southern University is also receiving votes in the latest NCBWA baseball poll entering for the first time at the start of the season.

It’s a great honor for HBCU baseball programs to be mentioned with the best teams in the nation and it speaks volumes. It’s nice to be recognized in the regular season poll, but the goal is to be in the poll at the end of the season because that means they’re probably in the NCAA tournament. That’s what programs want to do – win their conference and go to a regional.

Alabama State went 3-1 earning a series win over Purdue-Ft. Wayne in this past weekend’s four-game season opening series. The Hornets scored 47 runs during the series.

Coppin State completed a three-game series-opening sweep over Saint Peter’s University. The team hit .393 for the series, outscoring Saint Peter’s, 42-19, with 42 base hits and ten stolen bases. Sixteen of Coppin’s 42 hits went for extra bases. The Eagles are now 3-0 for the first time in school’s history.

Southern University started the 2023 season 3-0 and claims the 2023 Cactus Jack HBCU Classic Trophy after defeating Texas Southern 11-1.
