HBCU Baseball Weekend In Review – Large School Division

Baseball action this weekend saw sweeps, two of three game series victories, as well as a splits in four game series.  This weekend’s play was arguably the most competitive the conferences have been since the start of league play in both the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Florida A&M and Norfolk State split weekend doubleheaders. The Rattler won both games Saturday over Norfolk State out-hitting the Spartans by scores of 12-5 and 6-2. On Sunday, Norfolk State reversed the outcomes taking both games by the scores of 6-2 and 7-4.

Jackson State recorded its second sweep of Alabama State this season improving the Tigers to 21-7 overall and 15-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The weekend marks JSU’s fifth-straight SWAC series sweep to date.

Texas Southern was victorious over the weekend winning the three-game series over Prairie View A&M taking the series 2 games to 1. In the opening game, Texas Southern battled back from a deficit with a late-inning rally as they defeated Prairie View 6-4. Clutch hitting by PVAM Saturday led to a 4-2 win, before TSU’s live bats produced a 14-4 series finale win.

North Carolina Central and rival North Carolina A&T split a four-game tilt over the weekend. The Eagles of North Carolina Central beat the Aggies in the series opener on Friday 4-1. NCA&T bounced back Saturday by defeating NCCU 13-6.  On Sunday the two teams split a doubleheader with the Eagles of North Carolina Central winning 12-6 before NCA&T took the series finale by the score of 12-7.

The Grambling Tigers’ conference hot streak continued with a 12-9 victory over rival Southern in game one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference weekend series and followed up with a 14-6 victory in game two before the Jaguars salvaged a 10-3 Sunday win avoiding a sweep.
