The FMU baseball team defeated No. 1 ranked Southeastern University at home, splitting a doubleheader to hand the Fire (31-5) their first conference loss of the season and a regular season weekend SUN conference series loss.
For the first time in programs history, the Lions bested a top ranked team in the country. Southeastern is the No. 1 ranked team in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Florida Memorial so far this season has won five games against NAIA top rated teams.
FMU picking up the win after an eight-game losing streak dating back to a 6-4 win against Ave Maria University who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll ranking this past March 23. The Lions defeated No. 12 Keiser University, taking three of four before the Ave Maria series. With the win in game two Friday afternoon, the FMU baseball team split the doubleheader after losing game one 9-2 against No. 1 Southeastern.
Florida Memorial’s 7-2 win in the second game Friday marked the first time in school history the Lions have knocked off the No. 1 ranked team in the country. FMU’s victory also handed the No. 1 Fire, which had held a perfect 10-0 conference record, its first conference loss of 2024.
Although the Lions dropped the first game, they rebounded in a big way in the final matchup Friday with the win.
