Five HBCU Baseball Players Named Brooks Wallace Award Semifinalist

On Tuesday, the College Baseball Foundation announced the top 100 candidates for its 2022 Brooks Wallace Award.

The award, sponsored by Mizuno, honors the nation’s top shortstop, and will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. He passed away from Leukemia at the age of 27.

The watch list features five from HBCUs… Cameron Beaufort of Grambling State, Justin Cooper of Texas Southern, Cris Deguzman of Alabama State, Josh Hankins of Coppin State, and Trey Page of Delaware State.

Beaufort currently is hitting .301 with 7 home runs, 28 runs batted in, .549 slugging percentage, and a .421 on base percentage. Cooper’s stats for this season include a .267 batting average with 3 home runs and 24 runs batted in. Deguzman has a .317 batting average which includes 1 homer, 21 runs batted in, and 26 stolen bases. Hankins is batting .294 with 15 runs driven in and 12 stolen bases. Page, this season, is batting .375 along with six home runs, 21 RBI’s, a .682 slugging percentage and a .495 on-base percentage.

The award honors a DI players for his outstanding offensive and defensive play on the field during the season.
