Coppin State Jordan Hamberg Named Northeast Conference Baseball Player of the Week

Coppin State’s Jordan Hamberg has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.  This is the first time that Hamberg has received a weekly award from the NEC and the fourth time he has received a Player of the Week award from any conference.

A junior from South Plainfield, N.J., Hamberg hit .500 (6-of-12) with six runs, two home runs, two triples and drove in nine runs while also drawing four walks and stealing three bases.  Hamberg totaled a 2.042 OPS with a 1.417 slugging percentage and .625 on-base percentage as the Eagles swept their season-opening series against Saint Peter’s.

Hamberg also allowed just one earned run while striking out six in 5.0 innings against the Peacocks on Sunday but did not receive a decision.

To kick off the season, Hamberg went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a pair of walks and two steals in a 12-4 victory.  The following day, Hamberg went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI while homering for the second-straight day and drawing two more walks.  Hamberg closed the series with a 3-for-5 performance where he recorded two triples and a double while drawing in four runs.

Hamberg’s three-run home run on Saturday gave CSU a 4-0 lead in the second inning and his bases-clearing triple on Sunday broke a tie and gave the Navy & Gold the lead for good.

Hamberg now has ten home runs in his career along with 16 doubles and five triples while hitting .366 in 84 games. On the mound, Hamberg has fanned 121 batters, ranking sixth in school-history and just shy of fourth and fifth place, in 95.2 innings of work.

Liam McCallum and Brody Black also received NEC Prime Performer recognition. McCallum earned his first career win in his first career start on in the season opener on Friday, allowing no earned runs in 5.0 innings while striking out seven.  Black hit .500 (3-of-6) with a team-high eight runs while recording a home run, a double, three RBI and three walks in a pair of starts.

Coppin is set to host Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday, February 21 in a 3 pm first pitch at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Mount (3-0) is coming off a three-game sweep of Longwood to open its season.
