Both large and small HBCU baseball programs seasons are in full swing and delivered an exciting weekend full of action from around the country. Black College Nines (BCN) notes some of the action from this past weekend.
Grambling State University
Cameron Bufford ties all- time career home run record at Grambling State. Bufford hit #37 in a 5-4 loss to Alabama State in the Andre Dawson Classic.
Bethune Cookman University
Bethune-Cookman University defeated Florida Gulf Coast by the score of 5-1 Sunday. The Wildcats scored late runs in the 8th and 9th inning to seal the win. Jose Gonzalez led the Cats with 2 hits and 2 runs batted in.
Prairie View A&M University
Prairie View A&M goes 3-0 in the Andre Dawson Classic this past weekend in Vero Beach, Florida. Marshal Jonas, Michael Smith, Garrison Weiss, and Michael Burroughs all factored in the team’s wins.
Savannah State University
Savannah State only allowed LeMoyne-Owen University one run in the entire three-game series this past weekend. The Tigers scored 50 runs to just 1 run for LeMoyne-Owen. Game 1, 10-0, Game 2, 18-0, and Game 3, 24-1.
Florida A&M University
Florida A&M University won 2 of 3 games this past weekend at the Andre Dawson Classic in Vero Beach FL. The Rattlers defeated Grambling State in Friday’s contest 7-6, lost Saturday’s game to Prairie View A&M 5-4, then blew away Southern University 16-1 to finish the tournament Sunday. Freshman Carson Kelly pitched well, Junior Janmikell Bastardo led the way offensively for the Rattlers, along with Sebastian Greico.
Stillman College
Stillman College (7-6) used extra innings Saturday to complete a 2-1 Southern States Athletic Conference series win at Thomas University. It is the program’s first SSAC series win. After being shut out 7-0 in Game 1 on Friday, the Tigers jumped out to an 11-1 lead in Game 2 and held on for a 14-13 win. Saturday, Stillman fought back to take the lead in the ninth and won 14-12 in 10 innings to complete a 3-2 week. Pitchers Raymon Vaughan and Cody Clark earned the two weekend wins. Kobe Lewis (2), Sieas Elliott and Troy Davis each hit home runs during the weekend.
West Virginia State University
West Virginia State shutout Lock Haven by the final score of 6-0 in the final game of the Wilson Tobs College Classic on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets went 2-2 at the tournament.
Edward Waters University
Edward Waters won the scheduled three-game series against Lane College in SIAC action going 2-1.
Rust College
Rust College avoided being swept by Talladega taking the series finale 11-9 holding off a late inning Talladega rally.
Talladega College
Talladega took its first GCAC series 2-1 over Rust College. The Tornadoes tallied 51 runs to Rust’s 16. Talladega finished with 15 stolen bases in the series. Miguel Oropeza paced all hitters going 6-for-9 with 8 RBIs, 7 runs scored, and two walks while adding two triples. Samuel Guadamuz went 5 innings allowing 2 runs, 5 hits and 11 strikeouts in a 12-2 win on Saturday.
Noteworthy:
Tougaloo College split its four-game series against Marion University (IN). The Bulldogs opened the four-game set with a 10-6 win, lost game two 16-2, a late eighth inning run lead to a 3-2 Tougaloo win in game three, before series finale 26-0 defeat.
