Who’s Hot in HBCU Baseball: Week Four

Black College Nines continues it’s fourth week into the 2024 season of “Who’s Hot” in HBCU baseball.

Grambling State University

The Tigers’ Camron Bufford tied the Grambling State career home run record in a 5-4 loss to Alabama State. The South Holland, Ill., native homered down the right field line in the 2nd inning in the Andre Dawson Classic this past weekend in Vero Beach, FL. Bufford now has 37 career home runs.

 

Bluefield State University 

Righhanded pitcher Alex Kanipe (2-2), threw a complete game commanding performance on the mound defeating Claflin University sweeping the series finale. In 7.0 innings, Kanipe allowed 4 hits, 1 earned run while striking out 12 Claflin batters.

 

 

Talladega College

Righhander Samuel Guadamuz, born in Managua, Nicaragua, only needed 5.0 innings on the hill Saturday in game two of Talladega’s three-game series 12-2 win. He allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs, while striking out a season’s best 11 batters. This is Guadamuz second selection making HBCU baseball’s “Who’s Hot” list. 

 

Talladega took its first GCAC series 2-1 over Rust College. INF Miguel Oropeza paced all hitters going 6-for-9 with 8 RBIs, 7 runs scored, and two walks while adding adding two triples as Talladega took its first GCAC series 2-1 over Rust College.

 

 

Southern University 

Ranard Grace, a redshirt sophomore left handed pitcher from Madison, MS., went 6.0 innings allowing 1 hit, 0 runs while striking out 7 in Southern’s 7-1 win over Alabama State this past weekend in the Andre Dawson Classic in Vero Beach, FL.

 

 

Huston-Tillotson University 

Brycen Lee (2-1), threw a two hit shutout for the 4-0 win Saturday. The junior RHP, in 5.0 innings, limited Arlington Baptist to just 2 hits, no runs while striking out 6 batters.  

 

 

 

West Virginia State University 
Junior left handed pitcher JT Fabian, from Hudson, Ohio, in 1.0 inning of relief, struck out the three Lock Haven University batters he faced in the eighth-inning. 

 

 

 

Savannah State University 

Tigers’ oufielder Kendal Spencer, a junior from Tampa, FL., in the three-game sweep over Lemoyne Owens, Spencer went 4-for-8 at the plate, scoring 5 runs, 3 runs batted in, and 4 stolen bases. Spencer is hitting a whooping .542 with 2 home runs, 19 rbi, in 9 games this season.

Benedict College

Nicholas Gioia, a freshman two-way player from Lake Mary, FL, in a 12-2 win over Tuskegee University Sunday threw a dominating complete game. In 7.0 innings, Giola allowed 4 hits, 0 earned runs while recording 7 strike outs.

 

 

Jackson State University 

Garrett VanDeventer, a lefthanded senior pitcher from Arkansas City, KS, in a 6-2 win over Mississippi Valley State University, threw 7.0 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, while striking out 9 hitters.  

 

 

 

Virginia State UniversityRHP Freshman Gavin Stevens, a 2-1 win over Holy Family University. In 6.0 innings on the mound allowed 2 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run striking out 4. Currently leads the Trojans with a 3.45 ERA and a 2-1 record. Opposing hitters are currently batting .098 as Stevens has thrown 15.2 innings while striking out 17.
