For the fifth successive week, Jackson State University retains the No. 1 ranking in Black College Nines’ 2018 Historically Black College and University (HBCU) regular season baseball poll in the large school division, as announced on May 15, 2018.
The Tigers, 32-16 overall and 17-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), continues to receive votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division I Top 30 Poll.
There were no changes at No. 2 and No. 3 as Alabama State University and North Carolina A&T University retained their previous week’s rankings.
Changes came within the remaining large school top 10 poll slots… Texas Southern University moved up one spot to No. 4, North Carolina Central University fell to No. 5, Grambling State University moved up one to No. 6. Coppin State University, winner of the MEAC Northern Division crown at 18-4 in the conference, climbed two spots to No.7, Florida A&M University dropped two spots to No. 8, the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff down to No. 9, while Bethune Cookman University retained the No. 10 ranking.
In the small school poll, Albany State University remains the No. 1 ranked team in the small school Top 10 poll presented by Black College Nines. The Golden Rams received a selection to the NCAA Division II South Region playoff and will be competing for a national championship beginning later this week.
There were some changes throughout the remaining small school top 10 rankings. Winston Salem State University up to No. 2, Miles College dropped to No. 3, while Virginia State University, Talladega College (playing in the NAIA National Tournament), and Florida Memorial University maintained the No.4, No. 5, and No.6 rankings respectfully. Harris Stowe State University moved up from last week’s No. 9 ranking to No. 7, Edward Waters College fell to No. 8, Selma University (playing in the USCAA Small School World Series) jumped up in the polls to No. 9, and West Virginia State University rounds out our HBCU Baseball poll at No. 10.

The voting committee is made up of an informed and impartial group of individuals who follow college baseball on all levels, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) baseball. Included in the group are college athletic administrators and educators, college baseball writers and other sports journalists and broadcasters, former HBCU and other college ballplayers and above all else… college baseball enthusiasts who have an interest in promoting HBCU baseball.
As the college baseball season concludes, champions will be named in two divisions… the “large school” division will be composed of the 19 HBCU schools representing NCAA Division I and a “small school” division made up of the 32 HBCU schools with NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA and independent status.
The crowning of Black College Nines National Champions will be announced on Tuesday, May 22rd, 2018 at Noon (EST) on the Black College Nines’ website and Facebook pages.
