Jackson State University retains its No. 1 ranking for the third consecutive week in Black College Nines’ 2018 Historically Black College and University (HBCU) regular season baseball poll in the large school division, as announced on May 1, 2018.
The Tigers of Jackson State are 28-15 overall and 17-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). JSU went 2-1 during the week and also continues to receive votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division I Top 30 Poll.
Alabama State University moved into the No. 2 spot as North Carolina A&T dropped from No. 2 to No. 3, North Carolina Central University moved up to No. 4 and Grambling State University fell a spot to No. 5.
The remaining large school top 10 poll is as follows… Texas Southern University at No. 6 and Florida A&M University No. 7. There were no changes from the last week’s poll as University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Bethune Cookman University, and Coppin State University round out the No. 8, No. 9 and No.10 rankings, respectively.
In the small school poll, changes occurred across the small school Top 10 poll presented by Black College Nines. Miles College becomes the No. 1 ranked team in the Top 10 poll. The Golden Bears are 29-16 overall, 12-1 in the SIAC Conference. This past week Miles went 4-0, have won the last six games and 8 out of the last 10 games.
Winston Salem State University slips to No. 2, Albany State University climbs to No. 3, Virginia State University falls to No. 4 as Harris Stowe State University dropped to No. 5.
Rounding out the remaining small school HBCU Baseball Top 10… West Virginia State University and Florida Memorial University continues to hold onto the No. 6 and No. 7 ranking respectively. Edward Waters College moves up one spot to No. 8, Talladega College slipped to No. 9, and entering this week’s Top 10 poll for the first time this season, Selma University comes in at No. 10.

The voting committee is made up of an informed and impartial group of individuals who follow college baseball on all levels, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) baseball. Included in the group are college athletic administrators and educators, college baseball writers and other sports journalists and broadcasters, former HBCU and other college ballplayers and above all else… college baseball enthusiasts who have an interest in promoting HBCU baseball.
As the college baseball season concludes, champions will be named in two divisions… the “large school” division will be composed of the 19 HBCU schools representing NCAA Division I and a “small school” division made up of the 32 HBCU schools with NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA and independent status.
The crowning of Black College Nines National Champions will be announced on Tuesday, May 22rd, 2018 at Noon (EST) on the Black College Nines’ website and Facebook pages.
