The Xavier University of Louisiana baseball team scored in seven of the game’s nine innings en route to a 17-10 win over Tougaloo College on Friday.
The Gold Rush (6-3) scored its first four runs against the Bulldogs (2-6) starter Bradford Patton.
With one out in the bottom of the first and bases juiced, Tristan Rodriguez hit a grand slam to deep right-center on a 1-0 count to make it 4-3 after Tougaloo scored three runs to open the game.
Xavier utilized 11 hits and ten base on balls to score one run in the second inning, one in the third, three in the fourth, three in the six inning, one in the seventh inning and four in the eighth inning and went on to defeat Tougaloo in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) baseball action at the Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans.
Xavier recorded ten walks from two Tougaloo pitchers. Losing pitcher Patton (0-2) allowed thirteen runs, ten hits and seven walks in 6.1 innings, and Jacquez Hardy allowed the Gold Rush four runs (two earned) and three walks including a homerun off the bat of Tristan Rodriguez (his second homer of the game).
Tougaloo kept the game interesting by scoring three runs in the first inning, one in the second, one in the fifth inning, two runs in the six inning and three in the ninth. The Bulldogs pounded out fifteen hits in the loss.
Xavier starter Blair Federick (1-2) allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits and struck out two. In relief, Trey Clark struck out four in 3.0 innings pitched.
At the plate for Xavier, Jose Fulgencio went 2-for-3 with 3 runs batted in and Tristan Rodriquez, for the day was 3-for-5 with two home runs and 5 runs batted in.
Tougaloo’s La’Nas Torrey went 4-for-5 while scoring 3 runs and Caleb Houston was 2-for-6 with 4 RBIs.
