Winston Salem State’s Randy Norris First HBCU Player Taken In 2018 MLB Draft

Junior outfielder Randy Norris was the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) player taken in the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft when he was selected in the 19th round (No. 556 overall pick) by the San Francisco Giants.

Norris is the first Ram player taken by the Giants and the second player drafted from WSSU. Norris was a three year starter with the Winston Salem State and is currently the team’s career leader in hits (231) and stolen bases (92). He finishing ranked fourth in the nation with a .437 batting average this season.

This past season, the High Point, North Carolina native batted .437, with 86 hits, 5 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home runs, drove in 28 runs, while stealing 34 bases and being caught stealing just 4 times. Norris was a Black College Nines Elite second team selection in HBCU Baseball this spring.
