Harris Stowe State University
The Hornets baseball team hosted the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans in an American Midwest Conference (AMC) four-game series over the weekend. The Hornets swept the opening series’ doubleheader as they won the first-game 21-6 and the second game by the final score of 10-3. In the series doubleheader finale, the Hornets split with the Trojans as they lost the first game 3-1 and won the second game by a final score of 20-3 to win the weekend series three games to one.
The Hornets’ bats were booming in three of the four games. In its three wins, Harris Stowe State bats totaled 49 hits, scored 52 runs, 11 home runs, 3 grand slams, 11 doubles and 9 stolen bases. Two of the grand slams game in the 21-6 series opener. Hornet batters were hit by pitch nine times during the series.
Two Harris Stowe State teammates, Brendan Claus and Maurice La Fon, both finished with two home runs for a combined 10 RBI in the final game.
On the mound, HSSU pitchers combined to strikeout 36 Hannibal-LaGrange batters, allowed 35 hits and only gave up 15 runs to win the series.
Will Crooker, in game-one, led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and eight RBI. In the series finale, Crooker was 1-for-4, 4 RBIs and belted his second grand slam during the series. For the weekend he totaled 12 runs batted in.
Luke Lampros, also hit a grand slam in the first-game, was 1-for-3, scored three runs with four runs batted in. During the series final game, drove home a run with his second homer over the weekend.
Maurice La Fon, in game-two, led the way at the plate for the Hornets as he went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a three run home run. In game two, at the plate for the Hornets he went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a three run home run. In the final game of the series, La Fon was 2-for-5, scored three runs, blasted two home runs and collected 4 runs driven home. 12 total RBIs in the four-games.
Matt Janocik was 2-for-4 and drove home two runs.
Brendan Claus, in game four was 2-for-2, scored two runs, knocked two home runs and six runs batted in.
Turner McDonald, in the finale was 2-for-3 with two runs, a homer and four runs driven home.
Bay To, was 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Florida Memorial University
The Lions received a gem of a pitching performance from senior Rafael Fernandez who held the nations No. 14 ranked St. Thomas University to just 5 hits while the Lions of Florida Memorial captured a 5-2 weekend series-opening victory Friday.
LHP, Rafael Fernandez, in 8.1 innings on the hill, allowed five hits and two earned runs as he struck out a season-high 12 batters.
Savannah State University
The Tigers swept Clark Atlanta University in three-games over the weekend scoring 60 totals runs by scores of 26-0, 10-5 and 24-5 in SIAC action.
Starting pitcher, Christian Harkey, worked 5.0 innings on the mound, allowed just two hits and struck out 9 batters.
Grambling State University
The Tigers baseball team rallied late using a seven-run eighth inning to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-8 in the second game of the weekend series in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.
RHP, Jason Alvarez, struck out 9 UAPB batters in the 11-8 victory in Pine Bluff.
Delaware State University
The Hornets split weekend action with Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Norfolk State with a 2-1 victory in the finale of a four-game Northern Division series. The Hornets earned a split in the series with the win.
Jordan Haddaway, threw 8.1 solid innings, allowing just one run on seven singles while striking out four and walking two to earn his first victory as a Hornet.
Krew Bouldin was two-for-four at the plate and drove in both DSU runs leading to the 2-1 victory.
