Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball: Week Five

Black College Nines continues its fifth week of “Who’s Hot” in HBCU baseball.

North Carolina A&T State University 

The Aggies swept Eastern Illinois over the weekend to improve to 9-2 for the season. TJ Ash helped lead the team during the three-game series. He was 1-for-3 in game 1 with a run producing double. In game 2, Ash was 2-for-3 including a 2-run home run and a run producing single that resulted in 3 runs batted in. In the series finale he was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs batted in.

 

The Aggies defeated Eastern Illinois 4-3 in walk-off fashion after rallying with two runs in the 6th inning and one in the 8th for the win. In relief, the pitching efforts of Angel Ortiz shut down Eastern Illinois from scoring to pick up the win Saturday. Ortiz went 2.0 innings without allowing a hit, no runs while striking out 3 of the 7 batters faced.

 

Jake Delisi, in  2.0 innings on the mound allowed just one hit, no runs, striking out 2.

 

 

 

Dillard University 

In Dillard’s 5-3 win over Madonna University, RHP Jorge Guerra’s pitching gem secured Dillard’s third win of the season. Guerra threw a complete game, striking out 11 batters and allowing only 4 hits.

 

 

 

Jackson State University 

RHP Isaiah Williams threw 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits on Saturday striking out 11 Alcorn State hitters to help lead the Tigers past Alcorn State.

 

 

 

Bluefield State University 

Bluefield State’s Tahraun Hammond, in Big Blue 7-6 win Saturday over Wheeling University went 4-for-5, scoring 3 runs and recording 3 runs batted in. On the mound, he pitched 1.0 innings, striking out 3 batters for the win.

 

 

In that Bluefield State win, starter Alex Kanipe lasted 7.0 innings striking out 9 batters.

 

 

 

 

Norfolk State University 

In the Spartans 12-9 win over Saint Peters University, Jalan Jones was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored, 4 runs batted in on two run producing doubles.

 

 

 

RHP Nolan Manzer working the 8th and 9th inning. In 1.2 innings in relief, struck out out 4 batters for his first save of the season.  

 

 

 

Benedict College 

OF Jamell Mitchell, one of the top base stealers in NCAA Division II baseball, recorded 7 steals over the weekend in the Tigers three-game sweep of LeMoyne-Owen. Mitchell’s total of 7 steals for the series moves him into the top 5 in DII base thefts.

 

Grambling State University 

In the Tigers 3-2 win over Florida A&M in the Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas HBCU Baseball Classic in Atlanta, Cameron Bufford was 2-4 scoring 2 runs and 1 run batted in. Bufford became Grambling’s all-time home run leader with 38 career homers.

 

 

Alabama State University 

Alabama State University completed a series sweep of University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Kyler McIntosh, in game 2 went 3-3, with 2 runs scored and 5 runs batted in. For the series, McIntosh went 6-12 with 7 runs batted in and 3 doubles.

 

 

 

Cristian Lopez went 6-14 in the Hornets’ three-game series with 5 runs batted in and 2 home runs.
