Who’s Hot in HBCU Baseball-Week Five

Black College Nines continues to recognize the baseball programs and players who stood out in weekend action in our series… Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball.

Bluefield State College

Bluefield State swept four games over HBCU’s No. 4 Virginia State. In the second game of the series, a 15-2 Big Blue win, Tanner Brandon at the plate was 3-for-4 driving in eight runs to lead Bluefield State. Brandon drove in runs on a grand slam in the second, a triple in the fifth, and a single in the sixth. He also collected an rbi in game one on an infield groundout and another in Sunday’s game giving the third baseman 10 total RBIs while batting .400 for the weekend. 


Jackson State University 

Jackson State swept its three-game series over Alcorn State this past weekend including a 30-6 win Sunday in SWAC conference action. The Tigers were already up 16-6 in the sixth inning before exploding for 14 runs in the seventh inning and the game was called due to the mercy rule.

Devontae Rhodes went a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate with seven RBI and scored three runs.

 

 

 

 

Chenar Brown finished 5-for-6 with five RBI and scored four runs.

 

 

 

 


Florida A&M University 

Florida A&M claimed back-to-back wins over Grambling State with a 3-1 game two victory in the Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas HBCU Baseball Classic at Coolray Field in Atlanta over the weekend. Rattler reliever Zach Morea struck out five Grambling batters, giving up one run on one hit and one walk in 2.1 innings on the hill. 

 

 


University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team picked up a pair of wins over SWAC conference rivals Texas Southern recording a doubleheader sweep winning 14-3 and 14-10 in college baseball action securing its first two wins for the season. Infielder Jarficur Parker, in the two victories, scored five times and drove home five runs leading the Golden Lions.  

 


Delaware State University 

The baseball team put on a school-record performance in collecting its first wins of the season, sweeping a doubleheader from Mount St. Mary’s 32-11 and 11-5. While the 32 runs in the opener was not a team record, but the combined 43 runs in the doubleheader mark a new team high. DSU set new records for hits in a game with 28 in game one and hits in a doubleheader with 40.

 

John Weglarz collected nine hits in the doubleheader. Weglarz was five-for-six with a home run, four singles and three RBI in game one. He tallied four hits, including a double, and drove in two more runs in the nightcap.

 

 

 

Miguel Rivera was five-for-seven at the plate, including a double, driving in two runs in the opener.

 

 

 

 


Lane College 

The Dragons upset the No. 1 ranked Kentucky State Thorobreds. Lane won the series over KSU taking three of four including 18-3 and 5-3 wins in the series opening doubleheader. Lane’s Treviz Brown (2-0) went the distance in the win, striking out nine and allowing three runs on seven hits. Brown also added two hits and four runs of offense for the Dragons.
