Who’s Hot in HBCU Baseball (March 21-March 23)

HBCU baseball ballplayers were hot this weekend and are featured in another edition of Black College Nines Who’s Hot in HBCU Baseball.

Southern University at New Orleans (LA)

Joey Olveda (W, 4-2) in 7.0 innings faced 32 batters threw 109 pitches which 68 were strikes, allowed 8 hits, no runs, or any earned runs while recording 5 strikeouts in SUNO’s 7-0 victory over Stillman in HBCUAC conference action Saturday.

 

 

Stillman College

Gavin Rehorn, 1-for-2 on the day, doubled through the right side, netting 2 runs batted in in the fourth inning was enough for the Tigers to claim a 4-3 win over Southern University at New Orleans (LA) during the first games of their scheduled doubleheader.

 

 

Voorhees University

Jathan Smith (W, 3-1) pitched a complete-game over 7 innings, allowing 8 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, and striking out 6 batters, in the Tiger’s 7-3 victory over Wiley.

 

 

 

Talladega College

Miguel Oropeza had a monster three-game series versus Oakwood College. In game one, Oropeza finished the game going 4-for-4 with 9 runs batted in, two runs scored, a double, and two stolen bases. In game two, 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, a double, and 2 RBIs, to go along with 2 stolen bases. In the series finale, 2-for-5 at the plate 1 run, and 2 run batted in. The NAIA’s leading hitter (.551) tallied 12 rbi over the weekend.

Florida Memorial University

The Lions upset the NAIA’s 17th-ranked Keiser by the score of 18-7.

Christian Carratala led the offensive effort with four runs batted in, going 3-for-5 at the plate and scoring three runs.

 

 

 

Raymond Rivera went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and added three runs with his triple.

 

 

 

Ernie Farrell had a stellar performance, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and one RBI.

 

 

 

Lane College

Lane defeated LeMoyne-Owen College Friday to open the three-game series. Desean Rogers (W, 3-0) pitched 7.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned runs, and striking out 9 batters, in the Dragon’s 9-4 victory over LeMoyne-Owen.

 

 

Benedict College

Isaiah Canty hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Benedict Tigers to a 16-12 victory in the first game of their SIAC baseball doubleheader against Albany State on Saturday at Tiger Field.

 

 

University of Maryland Eastern Shore

The Hawks Julian Jimenez’s 2-for-4 day at the plate scoring 4 runs belted two home runs and drove home 4 runs batted to defeat the Stonehill Skyhawks, 14-3, for a series-opening win Friday in Providence, Rhode Island.

 

 

Jonathan Gonzalez Perez’s 5-for-5 day netted 3 RBIs.

 

 

 

 

Alabama State University

Esaid Peña (W, 1-3) in the Hornets’ 12-5 win over Florida A&M threw 5.0 innings and recorded 7 strikeouts.

 

 

 

Note: 

Harris-Stowe State University

The Hornets won 4-2 in game two of the doubleheader against Central Baptist on Friday afternoon at Stars Park. Senior right handed pitcher Joseph Mann would pick up the win throwing a complete game while allowing four hits and two runs and striking out five.

  1. Yall forgot about Shemaar Stapleton of rust college.
    He went 8-10 against Wilberforce and Harris Stowe. He had a HR , 3 singles , 3 doubles and a triple on the week with 14 rbis
