Who’s Hot in HBCU Baseball (April 4-April 6)

 

Coppin State University

Eagles senior right-hander Reagan Rivera (W, 2-4) gave up just two hits while striking out nine as the Coppin State baseball team defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. Rivera did not allow an earned run as he threw 7.2 innings before Ritz retired all four batters he faced to pick up his fourth save of the season.

 

Savannah State University

Tiger Brayden Thomas pitched seven innings and gave up six hits, one run and two walks while striking out a career-high eight batters against Tuskegee with a 11-1 win in the series opener doubleheader.

 

 

Morehouse College

The Maroon Tigers defeated Albany State in Friday’s series opener with a walk-off 5-4 win. With a man on board, Elijah Pinckney doubled on a line drive to center fielder scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth-inning after being down 4-2. Morehouse scored 3 runs to win the ball game.

 

 

Alabama State University

In the Hornets 11-1 win over Alabama A&M, Juan Cruz had two home runs, a double and 8 runs batted in.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Benedict College

Brailin Duran (W, 4-0) pitched a complete-game two-hitter as Benedict won the first game 11-0 in Saturday’s game one doubleheader. Duran went seven innings, gave up two hits (both singles), walked one and struck out eight.

 

 

 

Miles College

Miles defeated Edward Waters 7-0 in Friday’s matchup. Jaelyn Rhynes (W, 6-1) pitched a complete-game shutout only allowing 5 hits, no runs striking out 4 batters.

 

 

 

 

Edward Waters University

Alexander Davila earned the win for EWU. The right-handed pitcher surrendered two hits and three runs over six innings, striking out six and walking two as he improved to 8-1 on the season. Luis Valero threw two innings of shutout ball for the Tigers in relief. The hurler surrendered one hit, striking out three and walking none.

 

Huston-Tillotson University

Rams’ right fielder Gary Wafford was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, and 6 runs batted in. Wafford homered three times and had six RBIs in the second game of a three-game series with Xavier of LA.

 

 

 

Talladega College

The Tornadoes in nonconference action defeated Bryan 21-5 in the second game of their doubleheader. Starting pitcher Samuel Guadamuz picked up the win while allowing five runs on five hits over seven innings of work. He fanned 12 in the process.

 

 

Stillman College

Griff Minor (W, 5-3) went the distance as he pitched all seven innings with seven strikeouts in a 3-2 series opening win over Rust University

 

 

 

 

Wiley University

Jalen Porter (W, 5-3) was lights out on the mound in the Wildcats in their 6-1 Friday opening series 6-1. Victory. He held Oakwood to an unearned run on three hits and struck out 10 batters.

 

 

 

 

Isaac Burciaga (W, 5-3) in 7.0 innings pitched, gave up 9 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, and recorded 8 strikeouts.

 

 

 

 

 

Paine College

Paine College baseball team knocked off Trinity Baptist 9-5 Friday evening. Emmanuel Martinez got the start and worked five frames. He struck out eight. The Lions are now 13-7 on the season.

 

 

Note:

Alabama State’s Kelvin Agosto ws 2-for-5, scored 1 run and drove home 5 runs batted in during ASU 25-9 win over Alabama A&M.

Texas Southern’s Bryce Hughes had 5 runs batted in during 20-9 victory over Alcorn.

Southern University’s Kameron Byrd went 3-for-5 and 5 runs batted in during the Jaguars 12-10 loss to Grambling State.
