Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball

Who’s Hot in HBCU Baseball returns for another season. This past weekend HBCU baseball programs officially opened their 2023 seasons with quite a bit of action on the baseball diamond. Home runs, outstanding defensive plays, lights-out pitching and extra base hits were some of the highlights to the weekend’s play.

Black College Nines once again offers the 2023 edition of HBCU baseball season Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball. We continue to look at the players who stood out in their weekend series. There was a ton of action on the field. We present this past weekend noise makers…

 

Edward Waters University

Tigers starter Alexander Davila earned the victory for the Tigers, going seven complete innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs and recorded five strikeouts in EWU come from behind 5-3 win to open the 2023 season.

 

 


Florida Memorial University

Lions’ infielder Luis Ruiz recorded a big day at the plate helping FMU split a doubleheader in game-two upsetting top ranked Edward Waters by going 3 for 5 with four-runs batted in including a three-run homerun in the top of the 11th inning as insurance to seal a 6-1 victory.

 


Rust College

Malik Berrien who led Rust to a season opening win against Tuskegee by batting 2 for 3 with 3 runs batted in which includes two run producing doubles in the Bearcats 8-5 season opening win on the road.

 


Bluefield State University

Bluefield State junior outfielder Cole Cote provided Big Blue with all the offense the team needed with his solo home run deep over the left-field fence in the top of the fourth to defeat Anderson University 1-0.

 


Virginia State University

Ricky Jones batted 3 for 5 in a 12-4 win over Savannah State. Jones had a three-run homerun in the first inning and a two-run scoring double in the ninth for the Trojans third win to the start of the 2023 season.

 


Savannah State University 

RHP Jared Showalter in 5.0 innings on the mound yielded one hit, no runs striking out seven batters in the Tigers 12-0 win over Virginia State.

  1. JALEN PORTER (P) got the start in the first game and went the distance for a second consecutive start. He is the first Wildcat to throw consecutive complete games since Carlos Torres did it in 2020. In seven innings, he allowed five runs on six hits but only three were earned. Porter struck out 12 – becoming the first Wildcat to record double-digit strikeouts since 2019.
