Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball

Another weekend of HBCU Baseball action saw a national stolen base record broken, multiple home runs hit in a game, and some outstanding pitching highlight another edition of Black College Nines’ Who’s Hot in HBCU baseball.

Benedict College

In his final collegiate baseball game against Savannah State Saturday afternoon, Bradon O’ Connor set a new NCAA Division II stolen base record. O’Connor set a new record in stolen bases. The previous record was 96 steals which has stood since 1987. O’Connor now holds the NCAA Division II record for stolen bases in a season with 97 (in 43 games).

 


Coppin State University

Coppin State pitcher Jordan Hamberg, in six innings of work, struck out 12 batters, allowed five hits and just two runs in a 4-2 victory over University of Maryland Eastern Shore. At the plate, Hamberg went 3-for-4 with his eighth home run of the season, and two runs batted in. Today’s game marked the fourth time this season Hamberg has pitched with at least ten strikeouts.

 


Florida A&M University

FAMU hitter Ethan Jenkins had a tremendous weekend. His live bat helped the Rattlers to a three game sweep of Mississippi Valley State. In the first game of the series, Jenkins was 4-for-4 with four home runs and six RBIs. In game two, Jenkins went 2-for-3, with two hits, one home run and a run batted in. For the weekend he recorded five home runs and seven runs driven in.

 


Mississippi Valley State University

In a 16-5 defeat, MVSU Hunter Stallings, in six innings of work struck out 10 Florida A&M batters on Friday.

 

 

 

 


Bethune Cookman University

The Wildcats’ Nolan Santos threw 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits finishing with 11 strikeouts in a 9-5 loss to Alabama State Saturday

 

 


West Virginia State University

The Yellow Jackets swept conference foe Davis & Elkins Sunday by scores of 11-0 and 7-2. Freshman pitcher Quincy Thornton had an impressive performance on the hill. In 7.0 innings, Thornton allowed three hits, no runs and recorded six strikeouts.
