HBCU baseball programs, West Virginia State and Savannah State are ranked and/or receiving votes in Collegiate Baseball’s 2022 NCAA Division II Baseball Top 40 Poll as recently announced by the publication. This is the first time in history that two Historically Black College and University (HBCU) baseball programs have garnered votes at the same time in this national newspaper.
Both West Virginia State, from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), and Savannah State, a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), are listed in the poll along with 65 top DII baseball programs.
West Virginia State went 32-10 this past 2021 season and finished with a 24-4 conference record for the third time in MEC history and have won 18 conference tournament titles in program history. The Yellow Jackets were conference tournament champions and made a run in the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional. WVSU is ranked No. 23 in the 2022 preseason poll.
Savannah State was 14-7 this past season and played in the inaugural Black College World Series held last spring in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tigers are receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.
The publication gives out several awards: Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Coach of the Year, and Collegiate Baseball All-Americans.
