University of Maryland Eastern Shore Baseball Team Ends Nation’s Longest Losing Streak

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team celebrated its first victory of the 2025 season this past Saturday, defeating Towson University 14-7 and ending the nation’s longest losing streak, which had reached 55 games. This win marked UMES’s first success since May 2023.

Although UMES lost the initial game 10-1, they rebounded in the second game, thereby ending the extensive losing streak by splitting the doubleheader. Last season, the Hawks finished with a record of 0-48, with their last win being an 18-4 triumph over Delaware State University on May 20, 2023, during the final regular-season game.

In the first game of the doubleheader, UMES faced a 10-0 defeat. However, they found themselves trailing by five runs after the first inning of the second game. The Hawks managed to tie the game by scoring one run in the second inning and four in the third.

With the score tied at 5-5, UMES scored five runs in the fourth inning, taking a 10-5 lead. Although Towson State added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it 10-7, UMES responded with another run in the fifth inning and three more in the top of the seventh, securing the win.

Notable performances included Diego Aponte going 3-for-6 with a double and four RBIs, Ryan Howe hitting a home run and driving in three runs, Ryan Davis contributing with a double, a home run, and four hits while driving in two runs and Jason Brown going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Hunter Allen (1-1) earned the win in relief, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (both earned), and striking out four. Wilfredo Morales (S,1) did not allow a hit or run and struck out five in 4.0 innings of work.

The Hawks then faced Towson on Sunday, resulting in a 13-9 defeat.
