STARKVILLE, Miss. (March 3) – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball team handed No. 7 Mississippi State their first loss of the season with a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs, here Tuesday evening at Dudy Noble Field.
In a 2-2 tie, UAPB pushed across the winning run in the top of the eighth inning on an Andre Davis bases loaded walk scoring Joshua Cassidy.
UAPB grabbed the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with both Westin Hinkel and Rashawn Tillman scoring on a Vladimir Gomez single up the middle.
MSU tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with Wes Rea scoring on a Seth Heck single to left center and Josh Lovelady scoring on a Jake Vickerson fielder’s choice.
Both teams finished the contest with six hits each.
UAPB was led by Tillman from the plate as he recorded two hits in four at-bats and scoring one run for the Golden Lions, while Heck finished with two hits in five at-bats to lead MSU.
Davis (1-0) picked up the win for the Golden Lions, allowing two hits and striking out two in four innings of relief. Ciji Ramos made the start on the hill for UAPB as he pitched two and one-third scoreless innings and striking out four. Humberto Medina also made an appearance on the mound for the Golden Lions, allowing two hits, two earned runs and striking out three in one inning of work. Kevin Walsh also saw action on the hill, allowing two hits and striking out one in one and two thirds of work.
Ross Mitchell (3-1) received the loss for MSU, allowing two hits and one earned runs in one-third inning of work. Jesse McCord made the start for the Bulldogs, allowing one and two-third innings of work, allowing two hits, two earned runs and striking out one. Also making appearances on the mound for MSU in relief was Daniel Brown and Zac Houston. Brown pitched four innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three, while Houston struck out one in one and one-third innings of work.
The Golden Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 7 as they will travel to Prairie View, Texas to take on Prairie A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader in a 12 p.m. start at Panther Baseball Field.
