Tyler Overaitis’ two walk-off hits helped lead his West Virginia State University baseball team to win both games of a doubleheader against Concord on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the bottom of the seventh to beat Concord, 3-2, in a tight first game before they won the second game, 6-5, with a walk-off home run in the seventh.
In game one, after being down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, WVSU finally plated a run after a leadoff home run from the bat of William Glick to make it a 2-1 game. With the next two batters making outs, Michael Bittinger drew a walk to extend the inning. The next batter Kyle Waters singled to right field moving Bittinger to third base. Ryan Kay tied the score at 2-2, with a single up the middle that brought Bittinger home to tie the game at 2-2. Overaitis secured the victory with a walk-off single to right field to secure the 3-2 late inning rally.
In game two, West Virginia State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. In the top of the third, Concord plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead. But the Yellow Jackets put up four runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-3 game. Concord would knot the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Overaitis then belted a home run to right field handing West Virginia State a 6-5 win over Concord marking his second consecutive walk-off hit in a double header… the first HBCU baseball player to collect two walk-offs in a double header series win.
