The first week of Tuskegee Baseball’s fall season will include scrimmages, conditioning, group work, and nearly 30 innings of baseball. The Golden Tigers have a highly-touted recruiting class heading to the 2022 season.
Due to COVID-19, Tuskegee has not been on the field much over the past two seasons. The NCAA extended eligibility for spring sports athletes with shortened seasons. For Hollins, this led to the return of good weekend starters and an impressive offense. Hollins remains optimistic so far this preseason.
One of the biggest problems for Tuskegee baseball in the past two seasons was the pandemic. Last year there was no fall practice. The first practice was this past February and they only played in 15 games between February and May. That does not seem to be an issue heading into this fall season.
Tuskegee will get a big boost as the fall scrimmage includes an exhibition game against SEC powerhouse Auburn University. Tuskegee will take on the Auburn Tigers on Friday, Oct. 15th at 6:00 pm.
Tuskegee baseball is looking forward to the upcoming season with a new on-campus field to play on. The roster currently consists of a lot of newcomers. In spite of not playing a full season in two years, Tuskegee fall practice is looking good.
While we don’t know exactly what the 2022 season will look like for Tuskegee, the goal stays the same. The team wants to win, and the excitement is as high as ever.
Not many Division II teams get to schedule a big power school like Auburn. Especially baseball programs from the SIAC. That is reserved for HBCU SWAC and MEAC programs in Division I baseball. The exhibition with Auburn will help the team in many areas.
This has been a dream of Hollins since he started coaching the Tuskegee baseball program. The game against Auburn will be used as a platform to grow the program. Coach Hollins stated, “Our competition against Auburn University is an amazing opportunity for our student-athletes, the university, and the SIAC conference. Anytime you have an opportunity to face a power five opponent it creates the ultimate exposure. Coach Butch Thompson and his staff do an outstanding job with their guys at Auburn. They have formed a balanced blue collar ball club that plays the game the right way. They showcased the grit on their amazing World Series run in 2019. This will be a special night for myself because in 2010, God showed me a visual of us playing Auburn. I just didn’t know how it would happen, but one thing that is evident is that there is nothing too big for God. We are extremely grateful to Auburn University, Allen Greene (Athletic Director) and Butch Thompson (Head Baseball Coach) for this opportunity.”
Being a golden Tigers baseball player from 1984-1988 we always wanted to play our neighbor down I-85. We always thought we could have beaten them.We had some very talented teams in the late 70’s and early 80’s.The closet we got when we beat a Jacksonville State Team and later on that evening they traveled down the road to beat Auburn .Great job Coach Hollins and good Luck
Awesome news!
