Black College Nines Top Weekend Relief Pitcher Series presented by Black College Championships focuses on relief pitchers or closers for their teams when called upon to win ballgames. This is a new series to showcase HBCU baseball relievers who pitch in games after the starting pitcher has been removed because of fatigue, ineffectiveness, injury, or for strategic reasons. The weekly series will focus on HBCU baseball closers, setup men, middle relief pitchers, and long relievers.
Edward Waters University
Anthony Bayyat (W, 2-0) in 5.0 innings of relief gave up five hits, two earned runs, and six strike outs in EWU’s 9-8 late inning rally win. Bayyat shut down Kentucky State after they torched EWU starter Cameron Chastain for five runs in the first inning. Chastain lasted 0.2 innings before yielding to Bayyat.
Morehouse College
Saivion Mohammed, in 2.2 innings on the mound in relief, allowed only one hit, and recorded five strike outs in losing to Miles College 3-2 over the weekend during the three-game series.
Jackson State University
Brandon Haston helped his team’s cause on the mound for the Tigers by throwing three innings, giving up one run on one hit, with one walk and seven strikeouts defeating Alcorn State 12-9 in game two of Jackson State’s weekend series. Haston provided relief to shut the door on Alcorn preventing scoring chances.
