Three HBCU Baseball Programs Receive Votes in 2023 Pre-Season NCAA Division I Baseball Poll

HBCU baseball programs, Coppin State, Alabama State, and Southern University received votes in Collegiate Baseball’s 2023 NCAA Division I Baseball Top 50 Poll as recently announced by the publication. This is the first time in history that three Historically Black College and University (HBCU) baseball programs have garnered votes at the same time in this national newspaper.

Both Alabama State and Southern University, from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and Coppin State, a new member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) for baseball, are listed in the poll along with the nation’s top DI baseball programs.

Coppin State went 24-30 this past 2022 season and finished with a 17-13 conference record and made a run in the NCAA DI Greenville Regional.

Alabama State was 34-25 this past season, 21-8 in conference play. The Hornets after finishing first in the SWAC during the regular season, won the conference outright crown SWAC champions and HBCU baseball large school national champions this past 2022 season. ASU’s last season run included post season play in the NCAA DI Knoxville Regional.

Southern University went 27-31 this past 2022 season and finished with a 21-9 conference record and made a run in the SWAC championships losing to Alabama State in the title game.

The publication gives out several awards: Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Coach of the Year, and Collegiate Baseball All-Americans.
