Texas Southern University senior Kamron Fields was selected in the 20th round with the No. 611th pick in the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on the third and final day of the draft.
Field’s selection by the Tampa Bay Rays marks the first time since 2007 that a TSU player has been selected. With the second to last overall pick, Fields is the highest selected right-handed pitcher in program history.
Texas Southern has had 13 MLB draftees, including Fields, the only pick in the first 20 rounds, and the first since Donald Green in 2006 who was selected by the New York Mets. Fields is also the first player drafted under head coach Michael Robertson’s tenure.
Kamron Fields transferred to TSU from the University of Texas after the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season. He became the ace of the staff with a fast ball that tops out at 97 mph. In 13 appearances, 11 games of which were as the starting pitcher, Fields had a 5.03 earned run average in 68.0 innings pitched and struck out 79 batters. He also recorded a save during the 2021 season.
