After many years of playing its home games at a city-owned facility in Houston, the Texas Southern Tigers baseball program will have a home field to call its own. A partnership between the Texas Southern University baseball and softball programs and Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros has provided an opportunity in their efforts to help the Tigers achieve their goal of having a home field on the TSU campus.
The baseball program spent years playing home games and practicing at the City of Houston Parks and Recreation facility (Macgregor Park/Memorial Park). The partnership between Texas Southern and the Houston Astros provides a TSU baseball stadium on campus to help top student-athletes enroll in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Houston.
Construction has started with a groundbreaking ceremony. The City of Houston and the Texas Southern Department of Athletics officially broke ground this past October 3, 2024, on the new baseball and softball stadiums.
The new baseball stadium will have a new press box, concession stand, signage, lighting, scoreboard, and seating for up to 1,080 roaring Tiger baseball fans.
The construction cost is estimated between $7M and $9M, with a target date to open the stadium spring of 2026 upon completion of the project.
This combined effort between the Houston Astros and the Houston School District guarantees an assurance for HBCU student athletes’ growth and development while attending the institution.
