Following losses to former Red River Athletic Conference rival Wiley University over the past week, the Texas College Steer baseball team faced the longest losing streak in program history, recording 96 consecutive losses as they entered a four-game series against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (UHSP).
The Steers lost Saturday’s opening series doubleheader 18-2 and 10-2.
Texas College celebrated its first win of the 2025 season by splitting a Sunday doubleheader with UHSP. They lost the first game 5-1 but bounced back in the second game, winning 6-5.
This victory marked the end of their 99-game losing streak, with their last win before this being a 16-3 victory over Tougaloo College on March 10, 2020.
In the first game against UHSP, the Eutectics jumped ahead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and taking a 3-0 lead. However, Texas College quickly responded, putting together a four-run bottom of the first inning thanks to three singles, a double, a walk, and two errors by UHSP, which gave them a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, UHSP regained the lead by scoring two runs, including a two-run home run, making the score 5-4. Texas College fought back and tied the game at 5-5.
The Steers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a leadoff single and an error allowed the winning run to cross the plate. With two outs and a runner on second base in the top of the seventh-inning, UHSP had a single to left field. As the runner attempted to score, he was thrown out at home plate, ending the game and officially ending the nation’s longest losing streak.
