Talladega College’s Sweep of Oakwood University Makes Them First HBCU Baseball Program to Reach 30 Wins This Season

The Talladega College baseball team is the first to win 30 games this season. The Tornadoes reached that total after sweeping Oakwood University in conference action, which took place at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, AL.

Talladega completed the conference sweep over the weekend and on the road in impressive fashion with an 18-2 victory in game one, 18-6 win in game two, and the finale sweep in game three by the score of 15-3. Talladega moves to 30-15 and 17-3 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

In the wins over the Ambassadors, Talladega scored early and often during the three-game series and never looked back scoring 51 runs while holding Oakwood to 11 runs .

Talladega’s key players include Miguel Oropeza with an NAIA best batting average of .527 in 45 games and 50 runs batted in, Nomar Garcia who is hitting .359, and Armando Jackson hitting .340. Victor Rivera is currently hitting .338, Isaac Guzman at .336 and Darlin Fernandez at .331, while Eddie Velazquez and Jaylen Mateo are both hitting .343, and Allen Morel is batting .318.

The Tornadoes overall NAIA pitching statistics include Samuel Guadamuz (7-1) with a 3.19 earned run average with 78 strikeouts, Jose Franco (6-3) with a 3.92 earned run average, Rafael Diaz, Helson Fernandez, and Jack Wood (W 1-0, S3) picked up his first win of the season.

Six of the first seven batters in the lineup had six hits or more during the series.
