Talladega College head baseball coach Marcos Dominguez has scheduled a tough Tornadoes baseball schedule for 2022. Since his hiring, Dominguez has always prepared his teams for the rigors of playing a tough non-conference schedule during the season. Talladega, after dominating the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) joins the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), one of the toughest NAIA baseball conferences.
Talladega College opens its 2022 campaign with a three-game series on the road to start the season at Thomas University on February 4-5 before their scheduled home opener against cross state rival Tuskegee University in a matchup of HBCU baseball programs on Feb. 8.
Talladega has a full slate of tough conference games against top ranked NAIA programs.
The Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) approved Talladega College as a full-time baseball conference member on July 1, 2021 and began active league participation in the 2021-2022 academic year.
The move will bolster the conference’s membership in baseball, as the SSAC adds its second HBCU baseball program along with Stillman College, which joined the SSAC in 2018.
Talladega baseball has had recent success at the national level, with baseball national tournament bids in four NAIA National Opening Round tournaments (2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019) and four Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) championships.
The Tornadoes continue to schedule the nation’s top ranked baseball teams in the NAIA Top 25 scheduling 25 to 35 games each season. The SSAC boasts of typically having around five teams ranked yearly, such as Loyola University, Middle Georgia State, University of Mobile, Faulkner University, and William Carey University.
Talladega’s schedule for 2022 includes NAIA 2021 National Champion and preseason No. 1 ranked Georgia Gwinnett.
