Talladega College Baseball Sweeps Tuesday Nonconference Doubleheader

Talladega College swept a nonconference doubleheader versus the University of Mobile with 4-0 and 7-4 victories Tuesday at Sisley Field in Talladega, Ala.

With the wins the Tornadoes (9-4) extend their winning streak to seven games. They are 6-3 in nonconference games this early season.

GAME 1

Talladega took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Isaac Guzman led off with a single to center field and stole second. Armando Jackson sacrificed Guzman to third and scored on a balk.

The Tornadoes added two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Victor Rivera and Miguel Oropeza were hit by back-to-back pitches. Guzman tripled to right field, knocking in two runs scoring Oropeza and Rivera to go up 3-0.

Talladega would score one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Oropeza singled to center field and stole second. Guzman doubled to left field for his third run batted in and the game’s final run in the 4-0 win.

Guzman went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Oropeza went 1-for-2, scored two runs and stole two bases. Rivera also got a base hit.

Diego Duque (1-1) picked up his first win. He recorded 6.0 innings pitched and allowed just two hits, no runs while striking out three. In Jack Wood’s one inning of relief, struck out two for the save.

GAME 2

Talladega (9-4, 3-0 in HBCUAC) plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning off Mobile starter Ben Buxton on five hits and one walk.

The University of Mobile cut the lead in half with three runs in the top of the third inning.

Talladega added another run at the bottom of the fourth inning. Joshua Cátala singled through the left side and stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Victor River’s sacrifice fly scored Catala for a 7-3 lead.

The Rams added a run in the top of the sixth making a 7-4 ball game, but Talladega secured a 7-4 victory.

Cátala went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Miguel Oropeza went 2-for-3 and a run scored, Victor Rivera went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in. Isaac Guzman went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in. Darlin Fernandez and Jonathan Williams each collected a hit. Williams and Jahir Cruz drove in a run each.

Christian Delgado (2-0) earned his second win after limiting the Rams to three runs, two earned with four strikeouts. In relief, Sandro Adames gave up no runs or hits allowed recording two strikeouts, and Helson Fernandez in two innings of relief struck out four. The trio recorded 10 strikeouts.

Talladega is the No. 1 Top 10 preseason ranked “small school” in Black College Nines HBCU baseball and received votes in the 2025 NAIA Baseball Coaches Top 25 Preseason Rakings.
