New Mississippi Valley State University baseball coach Stanley Stubbs will start to complete his coaching staff after Mississippi Valley hired Stubbs as its head coach. The announcement of his hiring will be made official on Wednesday, July 28th.
Stubbs spent the last four years at Rust College as the head coach and recruiting coordinator. With his hiring at Rust in 2017, Stanley Stubbs was brought on to rebuild the program. There, he built and turned the program around which changed the baseball atmosphere including upgrading the field, tugouts, and adding a hitting facility.
With Stubbs onboard, the athletic department will hire the two paid assistants allowed for the baseball program. Coach Stubbs then has to choose a volunteer hitting coach and determine a MVSU support staff. Stubbs prioritized hiring them first because their full-time status allows them to recruit.
Stubbs will fill the spot of former head coach Aaron Stevens, who spent seven seasons at Mississippi Valley State. Stevens was terminated at the conclusion of the 2021 season, his overall record in seven seasons was 43-241.
Stanley Stubbs, who started his coaching career at Jackson State and won the SWAC championship in 1995, coached at Savannah State while it was a Division I program, turned programs around at Paine College, Benedict College, Lemoyne Owens College, before leading Rust to the inaugural Black College World Series this past spring in Montgomery, Alabama.
Stubbs has been one of the most respected HBCU baseball coaches in our game for more than two decades. He has a strong reputation for recruiting high-level student-athletes as well as being regarded as one of the top offensive coaches in the HBCU ranks. He has strong relationships with players and is a proven winner.
The Mississippi Valley State baseball program has finished at the bottom of the SWAC conference for several years. With the hiring of Stubbs, the athletic department will increase the salaries of the head coach, and for his assistant coaches, plus an increase in scholarships to go along with a bigger recruiting budget while their competition will increase dramatically.
Stubbs is the right hire for the investments made into the baseball program. He will rebuild the program. He will get the necessary resources for field upgrades, scholarships, equipment, paid assistant coaches, and mainly getting top tier scholar recruits into the program to be competitive and complete at the national level and for a SWAC Championship.
Coach Stubbs is off to a fast start. With his recruitment of new players, the team will have chemistry and a winning attitude.
His experience in handling all of the tough duties that come with being a baseball head coach plays an important part in his success. An Associate Major League Baseball (MLB) scout for the Washington Nationals, he had a huge hand in getting the Jackson State program where it is now, which is among the most consistent programs in the SWAC and in large school HBCU baseball.
Stubbs will build the program into a SWAC title contender.
Coach Stubbs,
I am looking forward to your first season at MVSU.
You have my son entering your program Chris Soeder.
