Southern University Receives Votes in NCBWA Baseball Poll

The Southern University baseball team is receiving votes in the most recent NCAA Division I Top 30 Rankings compiled by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Monday, March 11.

Changing program history has led to a raised profile for the Jaguars baseball team since the hiring of head coach Kerrick Jackson.

Coming off a 9-33 season last year in Jackson’s first year, Southern’s early season success stands at 9-6 and is the reason the Jaguars are receiving votes in the NCBWA Poll. Monday’s rankings mark for the first time since the 2009 season that Southern University has been recognized in a weekly poll.

Jaguars senior third baseman Tyler LaPorte was named to the Black College Nines weekly Who’s Hot In HBCU Baseball, which identifies the top players each week during the season. He was the only SWAC player to earn honors for week seven.

Black College Nines put Coach Jackson to the task of answering, is Southern Baseball back?

“Good that were being recognized for our play on the field. I’ll hold off on that but we need to start playing better, but I would not say Southern is back. I think the positive is what we are looking to accomplish especially for recruiting and learning how to win will make a difference.”
