Southern University’s Director of Athletics and the school’s Board of Supervisors collectively voted to remove the interim tag after Chris Crenshaw led the baseball program to a second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Regional.
The team went 20-30 under Crenshaw guiding the storied program during the 2020-2021 academic year, his first as a head coach.
The athletic department is confident he will continue the standard of excellence both in the classroom and on the field that has been established for their student-athletes and look forward to the ongoing success under the head coach’s leadership.
Crenshaw played a large part in Southern’s repeat of the SWAC championship this past season after joining former head coach Kerrick Jackson’s staff during the 2019 season.
Crenshaw previously was an assistant coach at Jackson State where he spent five seasons from 2014-2019, serving as the Recruiting Coordinator and pitching coach.
Crenshaw began his collegiate baseball career playing at Southwest Tennessee Community College and then at Southern University under legendary Head Coach Roger Cador.
Crenshaw was named Interim head coach on December 3rd, 2020. With his hiring this past Friday, June 18th, he became the 8th head coach in Jaguar baseball history.
“It’s a honor to follow in the footsteps of Coach Jackson and Coach Cador in this tremendous program. My staff and I plan to keep recruiting quality student athletes, teach life skills through baseball, and engage all of our alums. I want to thank God, Dr. Belton, AD Banks, and the Board of Supervisors at Southern University for providing me with an opportunity to lead this program of excellence.”
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Crenshaw earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Bethel University.
