Chris Crenshaw will get at least three more seasons to help Southern University baseball climb the ranks in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The university announced this past June 7th that Crenshaw was signed to a three-year contract with a one-year option after his current deal expired at the end of the 2021 season. Crenshaw led the Jaguars to the 2021 SWAC conference championship after being named interim head coach of the baseball program on December 3, 2020.
Crenshaw’s base salary of $100,000 for three years won’t change, but a release announcing the move says the Jaguars baseball budget will increase to help the program become competitive.
The new agreement includes incentives for Crenshaw and his coaching staff each year they win the SWAC divisional championship.
Southern University, which won 20 games in Chrenshaw’s first year, made a return appearance to the NCAA Tournament this season. The 2021 season yielded the Jaguars its second straight conference championship. Prior to the COVID-19 shortened season of 2020, Southern last won in 2019 when Crenshaw was an assistant under former head coach Kerrick Jackson.
The athletic department is committed to investing in the program to increase competitiveness in the SWAC and nationally.
The baseball program is in line for a six-figure increase in its budget, which will increase the salary pool for assistant coaches and provide additional money for travel.
With the commitment provided by Athletic Director Roman Banks and the university’s administration, Crenshaw will have the necessary resources needed to be even more successful in the SWAC.
