Southerns’ Gustavo Nava Sanchez hits a walk off home run over the right field wall to lift the defending SWAC Champions over Alabama State in the tenth inning in front of a packed house inside Wesely-Barrow Stadium. Final score was 7-6.
The Jaguars picked up seven runs off 11 hits on the day. In the second inning Jovante Dorris singled to left field advancing Justin Wiley to second base and sending AJ Walter and Jalon Mack across home plate giving SU their first two runs of the season. Then on the next at bat, O’Neill Burgos hits a GRAND SLAM over the right field wall bringing in JJ Rollon, Jovante Dorris and Justin Wiley giving the Jaguars a 6-3 lead going into the third inning.
Battling back and forth the next five inning, Alabama State’s Corey King got a fielder choice RBI brining in Hunter May to send the ball game into extra innings. Bottom of the tenth inning Nava Sanchez cracked a home run over the right field wall to close out the game to give the Jags their first win of the season.

Gustavo Nava did a good job behind the plate and put a good swing on a pitch for us to come out on top in the season opene,” said Chris Crenshaw, Southern Head Coach.
Enrique Ozoa picks up his first win of the season. The Jaguars scoring came from Dorris, Burgos, Rollon, Mack, Walter, and Wiley with one run each and the final run of the day for SU came from Nava Sanchez.
SU is 1-0 on the season.
