Six Top 10 Teams Fall in Wild Weekend of HBCU Baseball

The weekend was full of thrillers on the baseball diamond. Six teams ranked in the Black College Nines Top 10s tasted defeat.

Here’s a breakdown of the upset action…

HBCU Baseball Large School…

The No. 5 Alabama State Hornets upset the No. 2 ranked Bethune Cookman Wildcats winning 2 of 3 over the weekend. ASU claimed game one breaking a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning for an opening weekend series 5-4 win, victorious in game two by the score of 9-4, before BCU salvaged a series win 14-11 Sunday.

The unranked Alabama A&M Bulldogs upset No. 4 Jackson State Tigers Saturday in a high scoring affair winning the second game in the weekend series 22-17.

The No. 7 Southern Jaguars clinched the weekend three-game series beating No. 6 Grambling State Tigers with a 10-4 win in game one to open the series, a 13-12 victory in extra innings in game two, and the series finale Sunday12-9.

Large School Note: 

The No. 1 Aggies of North Carolina A&T State lost two of three games from William & Mary University.

HBCU Baseball Small School… 

The No. 6 Tigers of Edward Waters swept a weekend, three games series from No. 2 Savannah State Tigers. EWC won game one by the score of 10-5, followed with a 9-4 win in the second game of the series, concluded the doubleheader and finale sweep with a 2-run walk off come from behind 16-15 series clincher Saturday.

Small School Note: 

The fourth-ranked West Virginia State Yellow Jackets were swept in scheduled doubleheader action losing to Glenville State University Sunday 14-0 and 12-6.

The fifth-ranked Bluefield State Big Blues traveled from Bluefield, WV to New Orleans, LA to play NCAA Division I New Orleans, were swept 13-2, 26-6, and 11-1.

Unranked Southern University at New Orleans upset defeating the No. 9 Wiley Wildcats taking game one 15-4 before Wiley stormed back winning game two 10-0, and game three 7-6.
