Savannah State Rumored to be Hiring Former Pro Player as Assistant Coach

Since Florentino Burgos became the head baseball coach at Savannah State University on December 3, 2024, he has been tight-lipped on staff hires for the baseball program.

However, reliable sources from outside the Savannah State athletics department indicate that Stephen Larkin is rumored to become an assistant coach for the Tigers’ baseball program.

A former professional ballplayer in the Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds organizations, Larkin played collegiate baseball at the University of Texas and appeared in two College World Series (1992 and 1993) with the Longhorns.

Stephen Larkin was selected in the 1994 MLB draft in the 10th round by the Texas Rangers and began playing in the minors for the Low-A Hudson Valley Renegades, and then for the Single-A Charleston RiverDogs in 1995.

In 1996 and during the 1997 minor league season Larkin played for the Single-A Charleston AlleyCats for half a season and then with the Winston-Salem Warthogs.  In 1998, he was called up to Double-A by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Southern League Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds).

Larkin spent the 1999 and 2000 seasons with the Lookouts and finished his professional career playing in the independent leagues from 2001 through 2005.

Since the days of his playing career, Stephen Larkin has spent much of his time in baseball instruction and has coached a number of years in the Prospect League, a summer pro development league for ballplayers who still have collegiate level eligibility remaining.

Stephen Larkin is the younger brother of former Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Barry Larkin.

The Larkins had ties to the Florida Memorial University baseball program when Tino Burgos was the FMU head coach during his eight-year tenure with the school located in Miami, Florida
