MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Rust (24-24 overall) topped (Wiley 21-22 overall) 9-2 in the second elimination contest and Game 6 Black College Baseball World Series presented by Tyson Foods at Riverwalk Park – home of the Class AA Montgomery Biscuits – Thursday
Rust built a 4-0 lead through three innings and coasted behind starting pitcher and winner Frederick Perry Jr. (3-2) and three relief pitchers who blanked the Wildcats for the final 4 2/3 innings. Support for the mound men was supplied by Khalil Robinson who was one hit short of the batting cycle with a single, double and triple to produce there RBI.
The 157-year-old college just south of Memphis, Tenn., and with an enrollment of approximately 800 played like a NCAA Division I contender and advanced to a winner’s bracket Friday afternoon against the loser of the Florida Memorial-Paine clash.
Wiley closed its 43-game season with a two-hit and one RBI performance by Gabriel Garcia and final pitching setback of the season for starter Isaac Burciaga (7-5) who was recognized as an Elite HBCU All-Star by Black College Nines earlier this week.
The four-day tournament consists of double-elimination competition among NCAA Division II and NAIA teams in separate brackets for three days and a championship contest between bracket winners Saturday at 5 p.m. (CDT). The title game will be preceded by a special Black College Baseball World Series Presented by Tyson Foods Home Run Derby at 2 p.m. (CDT).
