WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State swept a double header from Bluefield State on Friday by the scores of 5-1 and 9-3 at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.
With the two wins, the WSSU Rams improve to 25-12 overall, while the Bluefield State Blues fall to 8-19 on the season.
In game one, WSSU broke open a 1-1 game with a run in the fourth and fifth innings, and then slammed the door with two more runs in the sixth to pull away for the 5-1 win.
Aaron Hatch went the distance for WSSU on the mound, going 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run, while walking two and striking out a season high 10 batters.
WSSU was led at the plate by Gavin Culler and Colby Keene, who finished 2 for 3, with Culler scoring once and driving in one run, while Keene scored twice. Rashad Webster finished 2 for 2 with a run scored, and Taylor idol went 1 for 1 with two runs batted in. Connor Andrus and Nathan Steger each drove in one run. Des Roberts went 1 for 3, and Jacob Barber went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
In game two, Winston-Salem State scored early and often, plating one in the first and four in the second inning, to jump on the Blues early. WSSU added two more in the fourth and two in the fifth inning and would go on for a 9-3 win.
Connor Andrus swung a big bat going 2 for 3 with a run scored and three runs batted in. Des Roberts went 2 for 3 with one run scored and two runs batted in, while Nathan Steger went 1 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Grubb went 1 for 3 with a run scored and one run batted in. Taylor Idol finished 1 for 1 with a run scored and Colby Keene went 1 for 4. Michael McNamara scored one run for the Rams.
Jordan Carlton picked up the win for WSSU, going 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs, three walks, and six strikeouts. Jordan Cummings went 2.2 innings hitless innings, with three strikeouts and Hayden O’Neal went 0.1 innings, with one walk and one strikeout.
Winston-Salem State and Bluefield State will return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon, as the Rams and Blues will play a double header, starting at 1:00pm.
