Claudell Clark is no Stranger to Norfolk State University. As a student-athlete, Clark had an illustrious career for the Spartans baseball team from 1998-2001 playing multiple positions as a pitcher and outfielder. As a pitcher in 2000, he went 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA striking out (92) batters earning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Pitcher of the Year honors. He also received additional awards in 2000. He was both Most Improved and Most Valuable Player for the 2000 season.
Clark garnered additional awards following the 2001 season, named the MEAC Tournament MVP, repeated as the team MVP for the second time.
2001 was a banner year. He placed in the top 10 at NSU in strikeouts, innings pitched, wins, decisions, and appearances. Holds the school record in strikeouts per nine innings (9.9) and strikeouts in a single season (92) in 2000.
Clark earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from NSU in 2001 while being drafted in the 28th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent time in the Pirates farm system in both Rookie and Class-A before an injury cut short his playing career.
Clark is in his 12th season as head coach of the Norfolk State University baseball program. It has been projected that more than half of the Spartan current roster, major league baseball scouts are showing interest.
Clark was rewarded the 2015 MEAC Coach of the Year award.
