Podcast: Kerrick Jackson Talks About His Departure From Coaching Southern University And Accepting A Position With Major League Baseball

When the Southern University baseball team captured its SWAC West Division Championship, SWAC Tournament Championship and participated in the NCAA Division I Regional in 2019, head coach Kerrick Jackson proudly raised the coveted trophy, but quickly handed it off to his players swarmed around him.

“I’m just so happy for them,” Jackson said “they’ve earned this. They deserve this”.

Throughout the three seasons at the helm at Southern, for Jackson it was always about his players.

That’s why it came as a shock this past November 30th, 2020, when Coach Jackson turned in his resignation to accept a new position with Major League Baseball as the President of the MLB Draft League.

Jackson’s departure leaves the baseball program in a better place.

This is the third podcast Black College Nines (BCN) has done with Jackson. In the many conversations we’ve had, he’s always stressed that his program goals include first and foremost ensuring that his student-athletes have a great experience during their time at Southern and that players develop into outstanding young men, while having an enjoyable experience on the baseball team.

This podcast reviews Jackson’s introduction into the program during the summer of July 2017, how he impacted HBCU baseball and the collegiate game and his recent resignation.
