Black College Nines (BCN) was in attendence as Claflin Baseball opened its 2018 season with a scheduled three-game series against St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. We caught up with Coach James Randle who was recently inducted into Grambling State University’s Hall of Fame this past summer.
Randle took over the helm of Claflin baseball in 2008, fielding only nine players. Each year since, Coach Randle has fielded a competitive team which includes capturing the team’s first-ever Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship and a 2016 NCAA Division II post-season South Regional Tournament bid.
A former major league draft pick of the California Angels, Randall played professionally for eight seasons with the Chicago White Sox and the California Angels organizations.
BCN had the opportunity to discuss the baseball program, recruting, expectations for the 2018 season, how scheduling tough nonconference opponents helps Claflin baseball and a hopeful march into the SIAC post season tournament.
