DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University baseball senior Luis DeLeon (Providence, R.I.) ended the shortened 2020 season as one of the top batters in NCAA Division I, and heading into the 2021 campaign he’s been recognized as a Preseason All-American, Collegiate Baseball announced on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
DeLeon received third team honors, and is the first Eagle in the modern era to pick up Preseason All-America honors. He’s also the only Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference student-athlete represented on the list, and one of four players representing a North Carolina school.
DeLeon ripped the cover off the ball last season over 16 starts, and batted a torrid .393 with a .689 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage. He also drove in 24 RBI on 24 hits, and led the MEAC in RBI and ranked eighth in NCAA Division I in that category.
DeLeon also topped the league in runs scored (15), home runs (6) and total bases (42), tied for the lead in hits and stolen bases (6), finished second in the MEAC in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, and tied for second in the conference in doubles (6).
DeLeon held an impressive 13-game hitting streak during the campaign, and had eight multi-hit games including a streak of five consecutive multi-hit outings. He also had eight multi-RBI games, and generated four RBI on a pair of doubles against Saint Joseph’s on March 1.
