Former North Carolina Central University pitcher Devin Sweet, a four-year starter at NCCU from 2014 – 2018 who set pitching records in wins (18), strikeouts (246), appearances (59) while taking the mound with (41) starts, has signed with the Seattle Mariners.
Sweet, a second team Black College Nines HBCU Baseball All-Elite team member in 2016 as a sophomore, set records this past season striking out (87) batters and matched his totals in wins (5) for the second time in his four-year lustrous collegiate career on the hill.
During this past season, Sweet recorded double digit strikeouts totals against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Savannah State University with (12), including non-conference games against Iona (11) and New Jersey Institute of Technology with (10).
Sweet now becomes the 6th HBCU Baseball player to sign a contract with a major league baseball club since this past June MLB draft. Sweet also marks the 10th NCCU player to play professionally with a MLB ballclub dating back to 2007.
Sweet will report to the Mariners Class A Rookie League team in Peoria, Arizona getting the chance to advance his game to the next level in his professional career.
