North Carolina A&T State Xavier Meachem was drafted by the Miami Marlins becoming the second Historically Black College and University (HBCU) player taken in the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft when he was selected in the 10th round the (No. 293 overall pick).
Meachem during the 2023 season, went 2-1 with five saves and a 5.59 ERA in 48.1 innings pitched. He ranked fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association conference in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (7.82) and seventh in saves. He finished the season with a career-high 47 strikeouts.
Meachem most consistent HBCU Baseball pitcher in the class. The Marlins were looking at a number of pitchers available, they couldn’t pass up his combination of stuff, command and competitiveness. He has enough fastball velocity, up to 97 mph at times with good sink, but it’s his plus changeup and his slider flashes plus, throws strikes with all three.
